The Two-Year Plan is currently in year seven.
They do not talk about going home as much as they used to. The timeline has quietly extended itself several times without any formal announcement. The house near the family is still theoretically on the agenda. The Dubai long term expat community has absorbed them so thoroughly that going home for Christmas now feels vaguely like visiting a foreign country.
If you ask them directly, they will say they are still planning to leave. Watch their face when they say it.
Type 2: The Strategist
The Strategist did not move to Dubai for the adventure. They moved for the spreadsheet. They calculated the tax savings, the yield potential, the mortgage-to-rent ratio, the Golden Visa timeline, and arrived with a financial plan detailed enough to make a banker emotional.
Moving to Dubai permanently was never the stated intention. It was a logical output of the numbers continuing to work. Every year the plan is reviewed. Every year Dubai wins.
The Strategist is now on their second property, has a very specific opinion about service charge reform, and attends the owners association meeting with prepared questions. They are genuinely excellent to know if you need honest market analysis. They will send you a comparison spreadsheet before you even finish asking.
Type 3: The Reluctant Convert
This type arrived under protest. A partner’s job offer or a company transfer that left no real room for negotiation. They spent the first three months explaining to everyone back home that it was temporary and honestly not really their kind of place.
Then something happened. Maybe it was the first December evening on a rooftop or maybe it was the school their child joined. Maybe it was the community they found that felt nothing like what they had expected.

The Perpetual Tourist has been to more brunch spots, beach clubs, and new openings in the past year than most visitors experience in ten trips. They approach Dubai resident community life with the sustained enthusiasm of someone who has just arrived and cannot quite believe their luck.
This type is exhausting and absolutely essential. They are the reason your group chat stays active, the reason you actually go to things you would otherwise skip, and the reason Dubai continues to feel like it is happening rather than just where you live.
Type 5: The Accidental Lifer
Did not plan any of this. Came for a short contract, met someone, started something, found that moving to Dubai permanently happened entirely without a formal decision being made about it.
The Accidental Lifer has stopped explaining themselves. Dubai is simply where their life is; their friends, their routines, their community, their children’s school. The city became home through accumulation rather than intention, and they have made a quiet peace with that.
They are often the most genuinely content Dubai long term expat you will meet, precisely because they stopped trying to justify or exit the decision and simply started living it.
Type 6: The Dubai Person
This is the ultimate Dubai persona category that you did eventually fall into. Not an expat, not a temporary resident, not someone between somewhere else and the next thing. Simply a Dubai person.
The Dubai Person has usually been here for a decade or more. Their social circle spans twenty nationalities. They remember what Sheikh Zayed Road looked like before the towers arrived. They feel genuine protectiveness about the city’s reputation and genuine irritation when people get it wrong.
